do "They" have anything called "the terrible thirty-three's" ... cause maybe they should
you know, the "terrible two's" are pretty aptly named. it's not that your child is terrible, by any means, it's just that ... well ... it's exhausting. it's up and down and up and down all day long. it's non-stop motion and noise. and it's not a matter of choice. i mean, you can't choose not to change the diaper. or not to respond to the plaintive cries of "juuuuuuuice?" and a lazy-ass, prone-to-depression person like me would never ever survive it if it wasn't peppered with moments of joy. there are times when she is just going ape shit ... running around like a maniac, hitting the cat, kicking the dog, throwing her toys, screeching ... and she suddenly does this mommy-love drive-by, grabbing me around the neck and squeeeezing, saying "oooooh, mommy, much!" her baby-speak for, "i love you very much." and that gives you a little fix to last through the next few fits of terror. or when she calls for me in the morning and i climb in bed with her to snooze for a few more minutes. she wraps her tiny little chicken wing arms around my neck and burrows. she allows no fabric to stand between her cheek and my skin. and for a rare few seconds, she is quiet. and i try to hold on to those precious times when ... something happens ... you know, say ... she gets hold of a black sharpie ... covers the walls in the entry way, the hall, above my bed, my pillow cases, her hands and feet? yep. parenthood is quite the joy, i tell ya. and i need some joy these days.
