promises, promises
i am taking my kid to egpyt. the summer after she graduates from high school. it will be sort of a full-circle journey for me. see, i have this dad. i think he means well, but ... well, he just never delivers. he's made a million promises that got broken, yet i still kept believing them. i guess because i wanted to believe them. but he made one promise that tore it more than the others. i was obsessed with ancient egypt when i was a kid. i read everything i could get my hands on, and if the history channel had been in my home then, i never would have allowed the channel to change. my dad, a world-traveler of the highest order, was thrilled that i had "inherited" as he saw it, some of his wander lust. and he promised, PROMISED to take me to egypt. in fact dear, why don't we go the summer after you finish high school? a rite of passage of sorts. we'll see everything! the valley of the kings, the nile, the sphinx, the pyramids, you name it! he's dying now. i'm not gonna pick on him for never taking me there. it wouldn't do any of us any good. but i am ... well, i am going to take my daughter. and that's a promise. one i intend to keep no matter the obstacles. and if she's not interested in egypt, you say? well, then i'll go there on my own. and take her wherever she wants to go when she's ready. but i have a feeling she'll get it. and that if you're still reading whatever kind of internet blather i'm spouting all those years from now, that you'll be checking out some wicked-cool travelogue photos.
