have i ever told you about the kabuki theater experience in japan? i wrote the story on my main site, but probably most of you haven't read it. it's so worth telling that i must recount it here. first i have to tell you what made me think of it. brendan fraser was on conan o'brian and talking about buying foreign language versions of his movies. one version. vietnamese, i believe, of george of the jungle has the following translation of a description of the movie: "addle-minded monkey boy hits testicles on tree." and here is the kabuki story as promised: the party bus picked us up again to take us into Tokyo for kabuki theater. it was crazy! we rented headsets that played an English translation of the action on the stage. i actually think the translator might have cleaned things up a bit for our delicate ears. for instance, there is one scene where a husband freaks out at his wife when he finds her working in 'the pleasure quarters' ... it's a long story, really, but he basically chews her out for about ten minutes straight ... all the while the translator is silent ... and we wait, and wait, and finally the translation comes; "Indeed! You are a prostitute!"
